Description
River Walk, or Paseo del Rio, is the city's leading tourist attraction. Built a full story below street level, it comprises about 3 mi of scenic stone pathways lining both banks of the San Antonio River as it flows through downtown. In some places the walk is peaceful and quiet; in others it is a mad conglomeration of restaurants, bars, hotels, and strolling mariachi bands, all of which can also be seen from river taxis and charter boats. Near La Mansion del Rio hotel, at the Navarro Street Bridge, is the huge retail-and-entertainment complex known as South Bank. Each January parts of the river are drained to clear the bottom of debris, and locals revel in the River Walk Mud Festival and Mud Parade. During the annual Mardi Gras Parade in February, colorfully festooned floats create a spectacle. If you miss an event, don't worry -- there are at least two a month, each with food, music, and lots of entertainment.
